Who doesn’t wear a t-shirt? I can’t think of anyone, can I? T-shirts
are one of the most widely purchased clothing items in America with a
lot of conveniences.
If you’re tired of your plain t-shirt collection, it’s easy to customize
your shirts to give them a new look. Many people have dozens of
t-shirts in their closets, waiting to be modernized. And DIY at
home is the best choice. Therefore, this is possible by cutting the
collar to a V, thus creating a new, more original look than the boring
round neckline. A deep V on your collar invites the eye to move
downwards, creating the illusion of a slimmer figure.
Gather your materials:
+ Cotton T-shirt
+ Fabric ribbon
+ Ruler
+ Thread remover
+ Scissors
+ Stickpins
+ A fabric marker
+ Thread the same color as your shirt.
+ Sewing machine or needle.
Step 1: Remove the stitches carefully
Remove the front of the collar by the thread remover, stopping at the shoulder seam.
Keep in mind to unfold the shirt, turn it inside-out, and place it on
the table, the front side is facing you. After that, use the thread
remover to remove the stitches carefully securing the front side of the
collar to the shirt.
If you don’t have a thread remover, you can snip it away with a sharp pair of scissors instead.
Stop at the shoulder and leave the collar attached to the back of the shirt.
Step 2: Measure the V
Fold the shirt in half lengthwise, with the crease centered on the front and back, making sure that the shoulders line up.
Lay it flat on a table, then use a ruler to measure the distance from
the point where the collar meets the shoulder seam to the point of the
V. Or else, you may want to try on the shirt to gauge how deep you want
the V by marking the spot you’d like the point of the V with a pin while
wearing the shirt.
Step 3: Cut out the V-neck.
Starting on one side of the V, use a pair of scissors and cut along
the marked line. Stop when you reach the bottom, and repeat on the other
side. Be careful to only cut through the front side of the shirt.
Note: The widest part of the fold you should also cut less than 2 inches
or less, to ensure enough fabric for the new collar. (If you cut too
deep, the neckline fabric won’t be enough and you’ll have to add more).
Step 4: Cut the center part of the neckline
Cut the front of the detached crew collar in the middle. You’ll need to first determine where the center is by laying the t-shirt flat with the front-facing you. Measure the width of the collar, and using your fabric marker place a dot in the middle. Then, use the scissors to cut this place.
Step 5: Stretch the neckline
Stretch the neckline a few times before sewing it back into the shirt. After that, stretch each side of the cut collar along the length of your V-neck.

Step 6: Pin the neckline
Use pins to secure the neckline to the newly cut collar. At the bottom of the collar, we will sew the 2 edges of the hem on top of each other to create a V shape.
Pin the rough edge of the collar to the shirt, and stretch one side at a time along the length of the V, pinning as you go. Place pins approximately every inch to make sure the collar stretches and stays before you sew it. Then, do the same thing on the other side.
Step 7: Let’s begin sewing!
Start sewing from 1 side at the shoulder seam, sew the neckline into the new collar, seam approximately a quarter-inch from the edge. Be sure to remove the pin as you sew.
Stop the seam when you are about 1 inch from the edge of the V-tail area. Temporarily remove the shirt from the sewing machine, use a pin to fix the bottom of the shirt hem with the other side of the collar to create a V shape. Continue sewing to fix the V-part of the collar.
Step 8: Repeat sewing with the other side
If you sew it right, the right side of the collar should look like the picture. We proceed to sew the same with the other side of the collar. Sew from the shoulder seam, until about 1 inch from the bottom of the V-neck, then stop.
Step 9: Make the V part
Continue to remove the shirt from the sewing machine and use a pin to fix the neckline with the other side of the collar to create a V-leg.
Step 10: Complete the steps on how to cut a tshirt into a v neck!
Continue to sew the V-part. So the new collar is completed.
